Tokiwa-so −トキワ荘

Toshima City Manga Museum

Toshima City has embarked upon a new vision of community creation that we are confident is fully in step with the needs of the emerging era. The revitalization of Toshima’s Ikebukuro, one of Tokyo’s subcenters, is steadily expanding, starting with the construction of our new city offices.

With the district being designated as both a special urgent urban renewal district and national strategy special zone, the community is transforming itself into an International City of Arts and Culture poised to strategically support efforts to boost Japan’s international competitiveness.

Toshima City also plans to build a manga and anime-themed museum inside of a full-scale replica of Tokiwa-so, the birthplace of Japanese Manga, within the Minami-Nagasaki Hanasaki Park to promote Toshima City’s role in the history of manga. The museum, which will be built to the original dimensions of Tokiwa-so, is scheduled to open in March 2020 in time for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
